Northleach with Eastington Town Council has a number of projects underway, all aimed at making Northleach a better place to live and work.
20’s Plenty for Northleach: In June 2024, the Town Council passed a motion supporting the 20’s Plenty for Gloucestershire campaign. The Town Council has written to Gloucestershire County Council calling upon them to provide a 20mph speed limits throughout Gloucestershire on streets where people live, work, shop, play or learn, with 30mph as the exception. This follows an earlier request by the Town Council to introduce a 20mph speed limit across the whole of Northleach which is being progressed with Gloucestershire County Council Highways.
Parking Strategy 🅿️ Did you know that Northleach is the only town in the North Cotswolds without a public car park? At the meeting in September 2024 the Town Council passed a resolution recognising that better public parking is a priority in Northleach. It was agreed to pursue two objectives. First is the implementation of time restrictions for on-street parking on the Market Place during daytime hours. A survey earlier this year showed that most visitors use Northleach as a local service centre and stay for less than two hours, but the availability of parking spaces is reduced by a minority of vehicles that don’t move for days at a time. The second objective was to pursue the creation of an off-street carpark to accommodate visitors who wish to stay longer. Members of the Town Council have since met with Gloucestershire Highways, Cotswold District Council’s parking team and local landowners to discuss possible ways forward.
Flood Action Group: After unprecedented rain and flooding hit Northleach in September 2024, Gloucestershire Highways jetted all the drains to help with future rainfall. However, leaves and debris will continue to accumulate, putting us at risk. We need community-minded volunteers to join as “Drain Guardians” to keep an eye on drains and clear leaves and report blockages before heavy rain.
New Garden of Remembrance: A new project has just got underway (December 2024) to develop a beautiful Garden of Remembrance in the cemetery. This new space will be a peaceful area for reflection and remembering loved ones, and provide additional capacity in the cemetery. The first stage of the project got underway recently, with a topographical survey being conducted to assess the land and help guide the design process.
Cotswold Glorious Grasslands: In 2024 the Council entered into a management agreement with the Cotswold Conservation Board for Wills Meadow. Part of the Cotswold Glorious Grasslands project, the aim is to improve the quality of the grassland over a period of 30 years by following an agreed management plan. Local wildflower seed was sown last autumn, and we are already seeing more flowers appearing in the meadow.
Wilder Verges: Following a successful trial in 2023, the Town Council is leaving certain highway verges unmown until autumn. By leaving verges to grow naturally, and allowing flowers to set seed, we can play our part in supporting nature. This is part of the council’s duty to consider how its decisions impact on biodiversity.
New Pavilion Roof: The Town Council has agreed to replace the roof at Northleach Pavilion, which has reached the end of its life and is leaking. This is a major project costing in the region of £50,000. This project is now completed.
